Scan #065: Sensors on the pole, iron on the ground, bets on the fan

Grid intelligence meets refining scale, construction-materials rollup meets yellow-iron incumbent, home+auto insurtech meets reinsurance's data moat, sports empire meets container shipping's turnaround.

Four emerging, four entrenched — each sector pairs a challenger against the incumbent it is trying to displace.

Gridware — Energy · Emerging. YC-alum pole-clamped sensors that detect grid faults, fires and vegetation strikes in real time. Just closed a $55M Series B from Tiger Global and Generation IM; deployed on tens of thousands of poles with utilities serving ~40% of U.S. electricity customers. A February 2026 Berkeley Haas study pegged the marginal benefit-cost ratio at 13.4 on PG&E's riskiest circuits.

Marathon Petroleum — Energy · Well-positioned. Largest U.S. refiner with 13 refineries and 2.9M+ bpd of capacity, cut its share count roughly in half since 2021, and threw off ~$2.5B in MPLX distributions in 2025 alone. Mannen's August 2024 CEO handover was continuity, not reset — buybacks, Gulf Coast complexity, MPLX cash remain the trifecta.

Infra.Market — Construction · Emerging. Indian B2B platform turned materials conglomerate. FY24 revenue ₹14,530 Cr (~$1.75B) with ₹378 Cr PAT; private-label share up from 33% to 64% in three years. Filed DRHP in Oct 2025, now mulling a ₹10,440 Cr reverse-listing via Shalimar Paints. The open question is whether the 2022 tax raid and ₹6,000 Cr debt stack survive the IPO prospectus.

Caterpillar — Construction · Well-positioned. 100-year-old yellow-iron Dow 30 component with a record $63B backlog and an AI-data-center power tailwind reshaping Energy & Transportation. Joe Creed took over as CEO May 2025. 160+ independent dealers in 190+ countries remain the moat no competitor has cracked.

Branch — Insurance · Emerging. Columbus-based home+auto bundler that quotes and binds in seconds through its own reciprocal exchange. Minted a unicorn in June 2022, then ran into a 293% 2023 loss ratio, going-concern language, and two rounds of layoffs. $51M Series D in Oct 2024 bought runway; Q1 2026 was the first growth quarter in two years. Can it refill subscriber surplus before cash runs out?

Munich Re — Insurance · Well-positioned. 145-year-old German reinsurer with ~€69B of gross written premium (2024), the industry's cleanest combined ratio (~84), and the oldest NatCat database on the planet. Hard market, climate volatility, and cyber accumulation all favor the balance sheet with the most data and the deepest capital.

Fanatics — Retail / Ecommerce · Emerging. Michael Rubin's three-headed sports empire: licensed merch, Topps-rebranded trading cards with 20+ year exclusive league licenses, and a #3 US mobile sportsbook built on PointsBet's carcass. $8.1B of 2024 revenue, last marked at $31B in Dec 2022, IPO window open. The question is whether the fan graph converts into sportsbook share before DraftKings/FanDuel close the door and Kalshi reshapes the category.

A.P. Moller-Maersk — Logistics · Well-positioned. Danish family-controlled container shipping giant and the most ambitious attempt to turn a shipping line into an end-to-end integrated logistics company. Gemini Cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd (live Feb 2025) is hitting 90%+ schedule reliability. The integrator thesis still hangs on whether Logistics & Services earns its cost of capital before the 2026–27 capacity overhang hits.
