Ohmium International
Modular PEM electrolyzers built in India, deployed from Croatia to New Jersey.
emerging
The question that decides it: Can Ohmium ride out BNEF-flagged 50 GW/yr industry overcapacity by owning distributed sub-100 MW PEM — with India manufacturing cost as its moat — before alkaline attackers Electric Hydrogen and Thyssenkrupp Nucera consolidate the GW-scale centralized market?

Snapshot
Ohmium is the PEM-electrolyzer bet that sits at the intersection of two awkward realities: green hydrogen is the clean-energy carrier that refuses to scale on announced timelines, and PEM-based electrolysis is the sub-cost-curve the Chinese alkaline incumbents and the US advanced-alkaline insurgents (Electric Hydrogen, Verdagy) are both trying to leave behind. Fremont-headquartered, manufactured in India, Ohmium's Lotus product line ships modular rack-and-stack cabinets that combine to multi-MW hydrogen plants. NTPC (India), NovoHydrogen (US), Amp Energy (India), IVICOM (Croatia) and Cepsa (Spain) are named customers. The company raised $250M Series C from TPG Rise Climate in April 2023, swapped founder Arne Ballantine for ex-Siemens-Gamesa CEO Markus Tacke in June 2025, and is now trying to prove the India-manufacturing wedge is defensible as the global green-hydrogen market goes through its first real credit cycle.
Founding story
Arne Ballantine came out of Bloom Energy, where he had been a VP of engineering on the solid-oxide fuel-cell stack. He founded Ohmium in 2019, HQ in Fremont, CA, with manufacturing deliberately placed in India — specifically in the Bengaluru metro (Chikkaballapur, later Doddaballapura). Co-founding CTO Chock Karuppaiah came out of Bloom's fuel-cell-stack engineering as well. Fenice Investment Group, which still backs the company today and whose founder Ahmad Chatila (ex-SunEdison CEO) chairs the board, was the founding investor. The thesis was simple: electrolyzers are stacks of repeating membrane-electrode assemblies that scale through replication, so manufacturing them in India at a cost structure Bloom could not match in California turned electrolysis from a capital-equipment business into something closer to a packaged-goods one.
How it works
Ohmium's Lotus product line is a proprietary PEM electrolyzer in modular, rack-mounted form factor. Each cabinet is roughly 8 ft × 5 ft × 6 ft. Cabinets interconnect to scale from MW to GW. The PEM electrochemistry produces hydrogen at purities above 99.99% and at delivery pressure above atmospheric — which cuts out downstream mechanical compression that has traditionally added 15–25% to green hydrogen's delivered cost. AC power and ordinary city water feed in; hydrogen and (minimal) oxygen come out. Ohmium claims Lotus Mk 3 (Aug 2025) occupies 29.7 m²/MW including maintenance walkways, operates -40°C to +55°C outdoors, and uses a "rack-in/rack-out" field-serviceable design so no cranes or shutdown of neighboring cabinets are required. Lotus Mk 2 (Nov 2025) claimed system efficiency of about 48 kWh/kg H₂ and 18 GW/tonne iridium utilization, roughly twice the US DOE 2030 target of 10 GW/tonne. Water demand follows the PEM norm of ~9 liters of deionized water per kilogram of hydrogen.
Product and business overview
One product family — Lotus — ships as PEM electrolyzer systems with an attached long-term service agreement. Modular field-swap economics are the differentiator against gigaproject alkaline. Deployments to date include NTPC REL (India): 400 MW under a June 2023 supply deal running through May 2025; Amp Energy India: 400 MW across sub-25 MW C&I projects; NovoHydrogen + TigerGenCo (New Jersey): 120 MW for peaking-plant fuel replacement announced November 2022; IVICOM (Croatia): 10 MW; HYGRO (Netherlands): 5.4 MW pilot; Cepsa (Spain) LNG-terminal electrolyzer in Andalusia; a Tata Projects India deployment partnership (2024). Pipeline exceeds 2 GW across three continents per the June 2025 release, though shipped MW remain undisclosed.
Business model and pricing
Equipment sales with multi-year service attached. No evidence of direct hydrogen off-take (build-own-operate) deals; Tata Projects and Spirare Energy appear as EPC/deployment partners. Unit economics: AP reporting (April 2023) cited "a few hundred thousand dollars" per ~50-ton/year cabinet — implying system price in the $500–$1,000/kW range, consistent with PEM industry norms.
Traction over time
- 2021: ~500 MW/yr nameplate manufacturing in India (per Series B).
- April 2022: $45M Series B; 2 GW/yr Doddaballapura build announced.
- April 2023: ~400 employees per AP.
- June 2023: NTPC 400 MW order signed.
- July 2024: Doddaballapura 2 GW/yr gigafactory opens (second India plant); target 4 GW/yr by 2026.
- September 2024: Tamil Nadu ₹400 crore (~$48M) MoU for Chengalpattu plant, 500 jobs.
- November 2025: Lotus Mk 2 iridium milestone.
Revenue is not disclosed. GW shipped has not been published; the only MW-scale deployment publicly confirmed as commissioned is the NovoHydrogen New Jersey site and the IVICOM Croatia site. This is the single most important data gap in Ohmium's public story: the pipeline is impressive on paper, but the gap between booked MW and commissioned MW is the one the whole hydrogen industry is now being graded on.
Market analysis
Fortune Business Insights sizes the electrolyzer market at $325B by 2034 at ~9.4% CAGR; more conservative industry reads (Rystad, BNEF) put the near-term addressable electrolyzer equipment market at $7–10B by 2030-32. BiofuelsDigest's $957B by 2034 is an outlier. The meaningful number is BNEF's March 2024 finding that global electrolyzer stack-assembly capacity reached ~50 GW/yr by end-2024 against demand far below — "severe overcapacity." China is 68% of global capacity. BNEF called a shakeout. The IEA and Hydrogen Council reported in late 2024 that less than 7% of announced electrolytic-H₂ capacity has passed FID; only about 4% of the ~50 Mtpa pipeline is at FID or under construction; 6.5 GW reached FID over the prior 12 months (with 40%+ in China). BNEF added that 90% of 2030 announced clean-hydrogen capacity has no identified off-taker. US green H₂ cost after IRA was about $5/kg vs ~$0.5/kg grey per Cleantech Group (October 2024). The IRA 45V tax credit and Treasury's hourly-matching and additionality rules through 2024–25 pushed most US projects to pause; 2025 budget-reconciliation discussions around trimming the $3/kg credit kept risk elevated. The cancellation list in 2024–2025 is brutal: Hy Stor Mississippi, Air Products Massena NY, BP HyGreen Teesside, BP Australian Renewable Energy Hub ($36B), Fortescue Arizona, Fortescue Project Coyote, Woodside H2OK, Trafigura Port Pirie, ArcelorMittal Germany, Iberdrola cutting 66% of its target, Repsol cutting up to 63% of a 2.5 GW target. Enkiai analysts counted 52 project cancellations and $22B in broader clean-energy cancellations in H1 2025 alone.
Competitive intel
Nel ASA (Norway, OSE: NEL) covers PEM and alkaline and saw order backlog shrink sharply in 2024. Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) is the integrated hydrogen player with a $1.4B 2023 loss and a Massena NY project paused after the Air Products cancellation. ITM Power (UK AIM) is a PEM-pure play under Dennis Schulz's transformation plan, generating H1 FY25 revenue around £24M. Thyssenkrupp Nucera (listed DE) is the one pure-play electrolyzer maker BNEF calls profitable, carried by the 2.2 GW NEOM alkaline order. Siemens Energy's Silyzer covers PEM; Cummins/Accelera is in PEM/HyLYZER after exiting a Chinese alkaline joint venture. Longi Hydrogen is the dominant Chinese alkaline exporter. On SOEC: Topsoe is building a 500 MW Herning plant; Sunfire (Germany) raised €200M+ in 2023. The direct US private peers covered on Teardown — Electric Hydrogen (advanced alkaline, $1B unicorn 2023, 100 MW-class HyPro stack) and Verdagy (AWE at high current density with Chevron/Khosla/Shell backing) — sit on the opposite side of the modular-vs-centralized debate. Ohmium's pitch is a distributed sub-100 MW PEM optimized for rack-level maintenance; Electric Hydrogen's pitch is a centralized GW-scale advanced-alkaline stack with higher current density.

What people say
The case for. Frost & Sullivan gave Ohmium a Technology Innovation Leadership award in November 2025. BNEF counts Ohmium among the five PEM companies that will represent roughly 72% of PEM production capacity by end-2024 — a commanding share within the sub-category. India manufacturing cost is a real structural edge versus European and US OEMs and positions Ohmium favorably for both the India Green Hydrogen Mission's 5 Mtpa target and cost-sensitive emerging-market tenders. Cleantech Group noted in October 2024 that distributed sub-GW projects are the ones still reaching FID; Ohmium's modular bet maps to that reality.
The complaints. The whole category is being graded at once. Plug Power's $1.4B 2023 loss, Nel's backlog shrinkage and the project-cancellation parade above are leading indicators. Electric Hydrogen's thesis — that PEM's higher iridium and platinum loadings and lower current-density stacks make it structurally more expensive at GW scale versus advanced alkaline — is the central technical attack on Ohmium's architecture; the November 2025 iridium-reduction milestone is Ohmium's response. India manufacturing cost is offset by quality-perception risk among Western utility off-takers; trade press cites it repeatedly though no specific field-failure reports have surfaced publicly. The June 2025 founder-to-operator CEO handoff reads as a board signal that execution discipline matters more than product vision right now — a reasonable move but an honest tell. And critically: Ohmium does not publish MW commissioned, so investors cannot verify whether the pipeline has actually translated to meaningful operating fleet.
Outlook: the open question
The answer-conditions: Ohmium's bull case requires two things to be true simultaneously. First, India's Green Hydrogen Mission must actually pull off large-scale tender awards in 2026–2028 that favor low-cost domestic PEM supply (NTPC, Reliance, Adani, L&T, Tata) over Chinese alkaline imports. Second, Ohmium must prove its modular PEM stays cost-competitive at distributed sub-100 MW sites while advanced-alkaline consolidates centralized GW-scale. The bear case: industry-wide green-H₂ demand continues to miss timelines, 45V contraction kills US pipeline, Longi's Chinese alkaline floors global pricing below Ohmium's India costs, and the Markus Tacke transition becomes about reducing burn rather than scaling. The Series C round in April 2023 was at an undisclosed valuation; absent a public mark, the only pricing signal is the June 2025 CEO change, which is not a positive one for a private company 18 months out of a growth round.
How to attack it
There is a real wedge for stationary-storage-integrated electrolyzers that time-shift renewable production — co-located with solar or wind curtailment, batteries for cycle shifting, and electrolyzer stacks for seasonal shifting. Ohmium's modular PEM is well-suited for this but not productized for it; the integrator layer (SCADA, grid participation, spot-electricity bidding, hydrogen off-take logistics) is where the differentiation would come. Stegra (Sweden, ex-H2 Green Steel) and Sunfire are building vertically; a software-first integrator that stays hardware-agnostic (bringing in Ohmium, EH, Verdagy, Longi as needed) could become the Latitude Solar of hydrogen.
Ohmium's exposed flanks: (1) Industry overcapacity that will force electrolyzer prices down 30–50% per BNEF; (2) Unverified MW commissioned — investor diligence cannot confirm the pipeline has become real operating fleet; (3) India quality perception among Western utility off-takers; (4) PEM cost disadvantage at GW scale vs Longi alkaline and Electric Hydrogen's advanced-alkaline; (5) Iridium supply — PEM depends on platinum-group metals in volatile markets. A new entrant should not try to be another electrolyzer maker — the category cannot absorb another vendor. It should attack adjacent orchestration.
Adjacent-segment play
The strongest adjacent is on-site hydrogen for microgrids and heavy transport refueling. The same rack-scale electrolyzer is the natural power source for a truck depot, a container-terminal fuel station, or a fertilizer plant with a captive ammonia process. The buyer is a fleet or facilities operator, not an energy company; the economics turn on avoided diesel and avoided certifications rather than green-premium off-take pricing. Nikola (bankrupt), HysetCo (Paris), Hiringa Energy (NZ), and Hydrogenics (Cummins) circle this market; nobody has yet built a turnkey depot-scale hydrogen-refueling system productized like a solar+storage kit. A "hydrogen refueling in a container" play using Ohmium (or any PEM) stacks could sell to logistics fleets at a unit-economics model that is independent of utility-scale project FID.
A second adjacent: oxygen co-sales. Electrolysis produces high-purity oxygen as a byproduct that hospitals, aquaculture farms, steel mills and wastewater facilities pay for. Captive revenue from oxygen can add 10–20% to effective project economics, which electrolyzer OEMs systematically under-sell. A third adjacent is electrolyzer-as-grid-service: fast-ramping electrolyzers participating in frequency response and curtailment-absorption markets independently of green-hydrogen off-take. UK FCR markets and ERCOT ancillary services can monetize ramp capacity at prices that make hydrogen production essentially free; a software layer that enrolls Ohmium stacks into those markets is capex-light and defensible.
